Meg Hammes is a client-centered therapist with over three decades of experience. Meg takes a non-judgmental perspective, fully acknowledging that you are the expert in your own life. Meg firmly believes that personal growth occurs within the context of relationship, insight, and vulnerability, seeing her role as providing support throughout your journey.

Meg works with adults, emerging adults, and couples grappling with a spectrum of topics including conflict within relationships, anxiety, depression, identity exploration, self-esteem, and trauma. When working with couples, Meg engages in a strengths-based approach aimed at facilitating reconnection, effective communication, mutual understanding, and trust restoration. She is also certified in Gottman Method Couples Counseling, Levels 1 and 11.

Meg is deeply committed to providing neurodivergent affirming care as well as affirming care for individuals within the LGBTQ+ community.

Meg’s therapeutic style is characterized by a casual yet compassionate demeanor, rooted in trauma-informed and multicultural perspectives with a dash of humor. Creating a safe and comfortable space for connection is paramount to her.

EDUCATION

Meg received a bachelor’s degree (BS) in sociology and women’s studies from The University of Northern Iowa. Where she focused on feminist theory, eating disorders and violence within relationships. Meg then completed her Master of Social Work (MSW) from St. Ambrose University in Davenport Iowa, with a generalist specialty. Meg holds licenses in social work in Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota as a clinical/independent social worker (LCSW, LISW, LICSW).

Meg has followed her passion regarding supporting resilience by becoming a certified trauma specialist trained in complex trauma (CCTP II) and certified in EMDR. Meg also has trained in various therapeutic modalities including somatic processing, dialectical techniques, internal family systems, and mindfulness-based and neurobiological informed treatment.

EXPERIENCE

With over three decades of experience in social work and mental health counseling, Meg has worked with children, families, couples, and adults in a variety of settings including crisis services, community-based settings, private practice and higher education as an instructor of social work and director of mental health services.

Meg will empower you to craft an authentic life aligned with your values. She helps her clients foster an environment where openness and vulnerability are embraced to move beyond conventional talk therapy and foster healing.
