How to Stop Obsessing Over Losing Weight for Summer: A Milwaukee Therapist’s Perspective
Article By: Lisa Hillary, LCSW
As the weather starts warming up in Milwaukee and summer plans begin filling the calendar, many people notice a familiar shift in their thoughts. Suddenly it’s everywhere: summer bodies, diet trends, workout challenges, before-and-after transformations, and messages telling us we should somehow become a different version of ourselves before Memorial Day.
For many people, the thought process starts quietly:
“I should probably get back on track.”
Then it becomes:
“I need to lose weight before summer.”
And before long, thoughts about food, appearance, exercise, and body image begin taking up a surprising amount of mental space.
If you’re finding yourself obsessing over losing weight for summer, you’re not alone. As therapists in Milwaukee, we regularly work with individuals who feel caught in cycles of body criticism, comparison, guilt, and pressure around appearance.
Why Summer Can Trigger Body Image Anxiety
Summer tends to bring more situations where our bodies feel visible:
- Beach trips
- Weddings and vacations

- Pool parties
- Shorts and swimsuits
- Social media photos
- Increased social events
For some people, these events create excitement. For others, they create dread.
Many people begin believing:
- “I’ll enjoy summer more once I lose weight.”
- “I need to fix my body first.”
- “Everyone else seems more confident than I am.”
- “I can’t relax until I reach a certain number.”
These thoughts can quickly become consuming.
When Thoughts About Weight Become More Than “Wanting to Be Healthy”
There’s a difference between wanting to care for your health and becoming mentally preoccupied with changing your body.
Signs you may be becoming stuck include:
- Constant body checking
- Weighing yourself frequently
- Feeling guilty after eating
- Comparing yourself to others online
- Canceling plans because of body insecurity
- Repeatedly starting restrictive diets
- Thinking about food or weight throughout the day
The challenge is that the more pressure we put on ourselves, the more our world often becomes smaller.
When Weight Loss Thoughts Become More Than Summer Pressure
For some individuals, thoughts about losing weight for summer can become more than seasonal stress. If food, body image, exercise, or weight concerns are beginning to consume your thoughts, impact your mood, or interfere with daily life, it may be a sign of a deeper struggle with disordered eating or an eating disorder.
Signs can include:
- Frequent guilt around eating
- Restricting food or skipping meals
- Anxiety around social events involving food
- Obsessive thoughts about weight or appearance
- Feeling like your self-worth is tied to your body
If this sounds familiar, know that support is available. Seeking help doesn’t mean things have to become “serious enough.” Therapy can help you build a healthier relationship with food, your body, and yourself.

Ask Yourself: What Am I Actually Hoping Weight Loss Will Give Me?
This can be an important question.
Often people aren’t truly seeking a smaller body.
They’re seeking:
- Confidence
- Acceptance
- Freedom
- Feeling attractive
- Feeling worthy
- Feeling comfortable in social situations
- Feeling in control
The difficult truth is that many people reach a weight goal and discover those emotional needs still remain.
Ways to Stop Obsessing Over Losing Weight for Summer
1. Notice all-or-nothing thinking
Thoughts like:
“If I don’t lose 15 pounds, summer is ruined.”
can create tremendous pressure.
Try asking:
Is there another possibility?
2. Curate your social media
Your brain absorbs more than you realize.
If your feed is filled with transformation photos, diet messaging, or comparison content, consider unfollowing accounts that leave you feeling worse.
3. Shift from punishment to care
Movement, nutrition, and self-care often feel different when motivated by compassion rather than criticism.
Ask:
What would caring for myself look like today?
4. Stop postponing your life
Many people tell themselves:
“I’ll wear the swimsuit later.”
“I’ll go on vacation when I lose weight.”
“I’ll take pictures after I change my body.”
Life becomes smaller when we wait.
You Deserve to Enjoy Summer Now
You do not have to earn summer.
You do not have to earn rest.
You do not have to earn confidence.
You deserve connection, joy, photos, vacations, and memories exactly as you are today.
